Wheel Stops

Wheel stops, also known as parking blocks, are physical barriers which are major components of any well-maintained parking lot whether it be inside or outside. They help keep vehicles in order by prohibiting certain motions in order to:

  •  Warn and stop drivers from causing structural damage within a parking lot
  • Stop improper vehicle encroachment in areas where pedestrians walk
  • Demarcate parking areas and loading zones
  • Prevent collisions between vehicles and walls, as well as vehicles and other vehicles
  •  They also allow easy accessibility for vehicles entering the parking space
  • They allow easy exit for vehicles leaving the parking space

Also, during the design of the parking lot and the installation of the parking blocks, the designer needs to do a risk-benefit analysis. Irrespective of their age, not every person that uses the parking lot has the same concentration and focus as they access the area.

Despite the many benefits that parking blocks offer, there is oftentimes the risk of a potential pedestrian accident if parking blocks are not well placed and marked. Hence, it can cause serious injuries.

This can cause the injured pedestrian to sue the owner of the building for compensation or even demand payment from their insurance companies, a case that sometimes becomes controversial during the evaluation process. Therefore, to prevent pedestrian accidents, wheel stops should be appropriately positioned to maintain safe pedestrian passage.

Wheel Stop Dimensions

Wheel stops come in various sizes, and individual sections can be merged to make any required length. According to the standards, wheel stops’ length should be limited to 6 feet in length and 6.5 feet tall.

Parking Lot Signage- Installation and Replacement

Metal signage installation involves using the most attractive signs that will help identify your parking lot, market, or advertise your business by creating memorable images to potential clients.

Even the most high-quality material used in signage is prone to damage by external factors, hence repair and possibly replacement should be carried out to ensure your signs are legible and continue to have positive communication intended in the parking lot to provide safety to all and ensure compliance with the existing policy.

Types of Metal Signs

  • Aluminum- Most custom signs are made from this material. The material is usually available in varying thickness so you can get it in various sizes, shapes, and styles.
  • Plate Steel- This material is suitable for abrasion resistance because it can withstand severe external conditions.
  • Stainless steel- Preferred despite its cost due to its look; feel and strength cannot be copied with this material.
  • Dibond- It comprises of an aluminum sheet placed on both sides of a polyethylene core. This material is suitable for use in harsh conditions.
  • Alumalite- It is durable and corrugated. It is also lightweight making it easy to install, and like plate steel and Dibond, it can withstand harsh conditions .

Metal Signs Have the Following Advantages:

  • Compatible with all parking lots
  • Cost effective during manufacturing since they are cheaper to produce
  • Support highly readable results in a permanent and transparent form
  • Long lasting signage- can last as long as they are in place
  • Little maintenance required- once installed, they only need polishing with a rag to keep the writing visible from a distance
  • Many options for different designs are available

The Purpose of Speed Bumps

Speed bumps are used to ensure that a parking lot is safe for all its users. They help in controlling the speed at which vehicles enter the parking area by ensuring drivers adhere to the set speed limit to enhance safety for pedestrians, other motorists, and even the structures in the parking lot by avoiding damage.

Importance of Speed Bumps

  • Create a safer environment for pedestrians in an area with a high frequency of cars crossing from one side to another.

  • Cost-effectiveness- Speed bumps are cost-effective to install when incorporated into parking lot construction. Parking lots should provide adequate safety to all those who use them. This is a major factor that clients consider when visiting parking areas. The safety aspects are immeasurable, but this does not rule out the need to think about cost when installing the speed bumps in the parking lots to ensure compliance with ADA regulations.

  • Decreasing traffic- Speed bumps help in redirecting traffic. Many people love to drive at high speed; hence, they will always avoid areas with speed bumps. This helps in reducing traffic in parking lots with speed bumps.

  • Slow traffic- Speed bumps are required where speeding is an issue, an issue that puts parking lot user’s safety and the installed structures at risk. Speed bumps force motorists to slow down whether the users like it or not. They minimize and eliminate damage to their vehicles.

  • Safety- Speed bumps provide immense safety to parking lot users. Pedestrians as well as motorists often travel throughout parking lots; hence the international regulations require speed bumps to be installed in all parking lots to reduce accidents.

  • Speed bumps stop drainage of rainwater from flowing into neighboring areas.

  • Noise reduction- When the amount of traffic as well as its speed are reduced, noise levels come to a reduction.

  • Keeping crosswalks safe- Driving too fast in parking lots increase pedestrians’ risk of an accident; hence speed bumps should be installed in areas that receive high foot traffic.
